Ambassador Scott Gration has had a distinctive career as a senior military leader, diplomat, and entrepreneur. He retired as a Major General from the US Air Force who previously served as a White House Fellow (NASA), operations group commander, two-time wing commander, and commander of a wartime combined/joint task force. His senior staff assignments include Executive Officer to the USAF Chief of Staff, Assistant Deputy Undersecretary of the Air Force for International Affairs, Deputy Director for Information Operations and Special Technical Operations (J-39) on the Joint Staff, and Director, Strategy, Plans, and Policy Directorate (J-5) of United States European Command. As a fighter pilot, he logged over 5,000 flight hours (T-38, F-5, F-16, and F-15) and flew 274 combat missions.
His diplomatic assignments have included serving as the United States Ambassador to Kenya, as the President’s Special Envoy to Sudan, and as Special Assistant to the President in the White House. Having spent nearly half his life in Africa and the Middle East and working in numerous overseas assignments, he has a deep and profound understanding of global affairs, multicultural communication, and international business development. Ambassador Gration remained in Kenya following his diplomatic assignments where he served as a businessman and humanitarian for another five years.
General Gration earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rutgers University and a Master of Arts in National Security Studies from Georgetown University. He speaks Kiswahili and is the author of “Flight Path: Son of Africa to Warrior-Diplomat.”
